Move the lens and cue into one sightline
Raise the webcam until its lens is close to eye level. If you use a laptop, a stable stand can improve both posture and framing; avoid balancing a camera on a loose stack of books. Keep the teleprompter window close to the camera preview or lens so that reading does not look like a repeated glance across the room.
A large text column creates more eye travel than a compact one. Adjust the width and font until you can read a phrase without moving your head, then keep enough surrounding space to see the next line. Do not center the webcam preview over the words if doing so makes you look far away from the lens.
- Frame from around mid-chest upward if your hands are not part of the demonstration.
- Look at the lens for the opening and closing sentence, even if you use notes between them.
- Use a plain background and move distracting objects outside the crop.
Treat room sound and light as part of the setup
A laptop microphone can capture keyboard taps, room echo and a nearby fan. Record a sentence at your normal speaking distance and listen with headphones before deciding that the audio is ready. Move closer to the microphone or choose a quieter room before compensating with excessive input gain.
Face a soft light source and avoid a bright window directly behind you. If one side of the face is much darker, move the light or turn the desk rather than adding filters during the recording. A neutral setup makes it easier to keep consistent color across separate takes.
Check the browser stream before the full recording
01
Close apps that already use the webcam
Video meeting tools and camera utilities can reserve the device. Quit them fully, then choose the intended webcam and microphone in the browser flow.
02
Allow access from the recording action
Open the page over HTTPS and request camera or microphone only when you are ready. If you denied access before, change the site permission and reload.
03
Record and inspect a 20-second clip
Review the saved video for focus, audio, crop and whether the cue is reflected in your gaze. A visible preview alone cannot confirm the exported file.
Make speaking to a webcam feel less rehearsed
Write phrases you can say in one breath, then use paragraph breaks to create places to pause. Read the idea just ahead of the line instead of tracking each word as it moves. If your eyes keep dropping, raise the window, reduce the line width or shorten the passage before changing the scroll speed repeatedly.
For a lesson or demo, keep a short outline nearby for the parts that depend on showing something. The teleprompter can carry exact wording, but it should not force you to ignore a screen, object or audience question. Stop between sections when you need to change the setup, then review each file before recording the next part.
